Are Toy Sunglasses Bad for Kids' Eyes?

Child wearing Baby Sunnies polarised UV400 sunglasses outdoors

Cheap toy sunglasses are everywhere: party packs, market stalls and supermarket checkouts. They look cute, and kids love them. But are they actually doing anything for little eyes? Here's what parents should know.

The problem with dark lenses that don't block UV

When you put on dark lenses, your pupils open wider to let in more light. That's normal. But if the lenses don't filter UV, those wider pupils can let more UV into the eye than if your child wore nothing at all. Many eye-care professionals point this out, which is why tinted lenses alone aren't enough. What matters is UV filtering, not how dark the lens looks.

How to tell if kids' sunglasses block UV

  • Check the label. Look for "UV400" or "100% UVA and UVB protection". If there's no mention of UV, assume they're for dress-up only.
  • Don't judge by colour. A light lens can block UV well, and a very dark lens might not block it at all.
  • Buy from a seller who states it clearly. Reputable kids' eyewear brands tell you exactly what the lenses do.
  • Polarised is a bonus. Polarisation cuts glare, so kids squint less at the beach and pool. You can check it with a simple test: see our guide on how to tell if sunglasses are polarised.

Fit matters too

Adult or one-size toy sunglasses often slide down a small nose, leaving the eyes exposed from above and the sides. Sunglasses made for a child's face sit closer and cover more. For babies, an adjustable strap keeps them in place, so they're actually worn.

Durability: the hidden cost of cheap pairs

Rigid toy sunglasses snap easily when they're sat on, dropped or stepped on, so you end up buying pair after pair. A frame made from tough, bendy material that twists and springs back is far more likely to survive a summer of play.

The bottom line

Toy sunglasses are fine for dress-up. For real time outdoors, especially in South Africa's strong summer sun, choose sunglasses with UV400 lenses, a proper child-sized fit and a frame that can keep up with them. Read more about polarised vs UV400 lenses.
