When Can Babies Wear Sunglasses? A Guide for South African Parents

Baby wearing Baby Sunnies sunglasses with adjustable strap

South Africa gets a lot of strong sun, and little eyes are more sensitive to it than ours. So when can your baby start wearing sunglasses, and what should you look for?

From what age?

Babies can wear sunglasses from the early months, as long as the pair is made for them. That means soft, flexible frames, a strap that keeps them on without pinching, and lenses that genuinely block UV. Shade, hats and avoiding the harshest midday sun are still your first line of defence. Sunglasses add to those, they don't replace them.

Why protect little eyes?

Children's eyes let more UV light through than adult eyes do, and sun exposure adds up over a lifetime. Glare off water, sand and white walls can also make babies squint and fuss. Many parents tell us their little one visibly relaxes once the sunnies go on.

What to look for

  • UV400 lenses, which block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Toy sunglasses often look the part but give little real protection.
  • Polarised lenses, which cut glare from water, sand and roads.
  • Tough, flexible frames that bend and spring back instead of snapping.
  • A strap for babies under two, so the glasses actually stay on.
  • The right size for their age. Frames that are too big let light in around the edges.

Getting your baby to keep them on

  • Start with short outings and build up.
  • Put them on before you step into the bright light, not after the squinting starts.
  • Wear your own sunnies. Babies love to copy.
  • Make it fun. Our secret fish card shows kids the polarised "magic" for themselves.

When do they outgrow baby sunnies?

Around age two, or when the frames start feeling snug, it's time to move up to a kids size.

Shop baby sunglasses for 0 to 24 months or kids sunglasses for ages 2 to 8.
